New resources: birth experiences

22/07/2025

Birth experiences vary widely, as do the reactions people might have to them. Some women have distressing or traumatic birth experiences. And a small number of parents who have experienced or witnessed a traumatic event during labour and birth might go on to develop postnatal PTSD.

To support parents through these experiences, raisingchildren.net.au has developed 2 new resources on distressing or traumatic birth experiences and PTSD after birth.

The distressing or traumatic birth experiences: a guide for birthing mothers article helps birthing mothers understand what these birth experiences might look like, how to look after yourself following these experiences, and where and when to seek professional help. It also covers making a complaint about your birth experience.

The PTSD after birth: a guide for parents article is designed for both birthing mothers and non-birthing parents. It helps new parents identify whether they might have postnatal PTSD, and provides information on professional support and treatment.
