Unlocking Maternal and Child Health (MCH) data potential

08/08/2025

Our knowledge of the health and development of our children is only as good as the data we collect and analyse. Victoria’s MCH Service collects some of the most comprehensive early childhood data (birth to school age) in Australia. It is the only statewide dataset on children’s growth, development and nutrition during the vital first 2000 days of life. However, this valuable resource remains largely unlinked to the broader health, social, and longitudinal datasets. Accessing this data could lead to better monitoring and understanding children’s needs in our community.

In a recent publication, GenV researchers highlighted the urgent need to connect MCHS data with other key datasets. Drawing on lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic, the article shows how data can shape more responsive policy, support early intervention, and help prepare for future challenges.

With national momentum building through initiatives like the Early Years Strategy 2024–2034 and Best Start, Best Life reforms, the time is right to unlock the full potential of MCH Service data. Doing so could enable smarter, more coordinated decisions that put children and families first.

GenV (Generation Victoria) is one of the world’s largest birth and parent cohort studies, led from the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute. By working with families, researchers, and policymakers, GenV aims to create a healthier future for all children, starting with better data.
